Cathedral stones are large upright crystals that are free-standing, sometimes on a pedestal. Large crystals, especially cathedrals, can crumble, so they are supported in the back by "wrapping" them in a special compound that prevents flaking.

Amethyst cathedrals like the one depicted on the left are beautiful and very popular. As all crystals, their shape, color intensity, and inclusion of other crystals in the cluster are unique. Also, the cluster could be amethyst while the outer layer is another mineral like agate.
